BELOIT — Beloit could become a major youth sports tourism destination if it follows through on plans presented today by the city’s tourism organization.

Visit Beloit unveiled a feasibility study prepared by the sports tourism consulting firm Huddle Up Group that studied the impact of adding various facilities to the community.

The study outlined three possible projects, in order of impact:

• An outdoor field complex with eight fields
• A new or enhanced multi-sheet ice facility
• Improvements to The Stateline YMCA Sports Complex diamonds.

The project is being led by Visit Beloit and the presentation of the feasibility study is the first step in what will be a long process according to Celestino Ruffini, chief executive officer.

The new outdoor field complex would include eight fields, with two of them having artificial turf. At least one would be indoors or covered.

A stadium field would have a capacity of 1,000 seats.

A facility like this would likely draw 12 new tournaments per year with more than 23,000 attendees.

The report says these tournaments would bring in roughly $166,000 in room taxes and $114,500 in sales taxes.

The field project could cost anywhere from $20 million to $30 million, according to the report.

The ice facility would include one permanent and one seasonal sheet, with seating for 500 in the main arena.

The facility could draw eight new tournaments per year with more than 12,000 attendees, according to the report.

The report estimates roughly $2 million in visitor spending with $60,000 in room taxes and $40,000 in sales taxes collected.

Diamond improvement would include permanent lighting, covered seating on all fields and added seating on a championship field.

Funding will be part of the planning process going forward, although use of the room and sales tax are limited, Ruffini said.

Janesville currently is exploring its own $50 million ice arena and convention center, and the consultant said they took that into consideration when considering the impact on a Beloit facility.
